Clove Hitch

A quick, adjustable knot for anchoring in to a point.

The clove hitch is prized because it’s adjustable under load — you can lengthen or shorten it without untying, which makes it great for anchoring in at a fixed point.

Why this knot

  • Adjustable without retying.
  • Easy to untie even after being weighted.
  • Quick to tie one-handed once practiced.

Steps

  1. Make two loops in the rope, in the same direction.
  2. Stack the second loop behind the first.
  3. Clip both loops through a carabiner, or drop them over a post.
  4. Snug it down and adjust length as needed.
