Footwork Fundamentals

Why climbing efficiently starts with your feet, not your arms.

New climbers instinctively pull with their arms. Efficient climbers trust their feet and use their arms mostly for balance. Fixing footwork fixes most other technique problems.

Three habits to build

  • Look at your feet. Place them deliberately instead of glancing and hoping.
  • Quiet feet. Place a foot once, precisely, instead of scuffing and re-adjusting.
  • Weight over your feet. Keep your hips close to the wall so your feet can actually bear weight.
