Harness & Helmet Pre-Climb Check

A quick visual and physical check before every climb.

A pre-climb check takes fifteen seconds and catches the mistakes that cause most climbing accidents: a loose harness, an untied knot, an unlocked carabiner.

Checklist

  • Harness — Doubled back through all buckles, snug at the waist.
  • Knot — Tied in correctly, dressed, with a fist-sized tail.
  • Belay device — Rope loaded correctly, carabiner locked.
  • Helmet — Level on the head, buckled, snug.
  • Partner check — Both climber and belayer check each other, out loud.

Tip

Make the partner check a habit, every single climb, no exceptions — including with experienced partners. Complacency is how mistakes slip through.
