Standard Climbing Calls
The shared vocabulary climbers and belayers use to stay safe.
Climbing calls are short, standardized phrases so a climber and belayer always know what’s about to happen — even over wind, distance, or a noisy gym.
The core calls
| Climber says | Belayer says | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| “On belay?” | Asking if the belayer is ready. | |
| “Belay on.” | Confirming the belayer is ready. | |
| “Climbing.” | Announcing the climb is starting. | |
| “Climb on.” | Acknowledging. | |
| “Take!” | Requesting the belayer remove slack immediately. | |
| “Falling!” | Warning of a fall. | |
| “Lower me.” | Requesting to be lowered. | |
| “Off belay.” | Belayer has released the climber. |
Warning
Never assume — always exchange “On belay?” / “Belay on” before a climber weights the rope. Mismatched assumptions here cause ground falls.
